Surrounded by nature, hearing the horses whinny, everything is in perfect balance. Things are going to be okay. Like any new situation, it takes some time to adjust, even if Axel and I have always understood each other, it’s something new. 

“Here you go.” Axel hands me a glass of wine and sits next to me, a beer bottle in his hand. 

“Thanks.” I take a sip, and he clears his throat loudly. “Sorry,” I smirk and shrug. We toast, and then I take a drink of the red wine as the breeze begins to cool down. 

“I know things got a little weird earlier, but I didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable,” Axel begins speaking, staring straight ahead. Unsure of what to say, I nod. If I deny it, he’ll know I’m lying. If I’m honest, there’s no turning back. I choose silence at the moment, drink more wine, and stare at the mountains. 

After a few minutes, I’ve organized my thoughts. “I wasn’t uncomfortable, but this is new territory.” It’s vague, but it isn’t a lie.

“For me, too.” He finally turns his head to catch my eyes. They’re soft and peaceful as I take in the swirl of colors, combination of amber and brown. 

We may be pretending this is a platonic living situation, but we both know there’s something deeper in the foundation of this agreement. A hope that’s blossoming. Then, why aren’t either of us confident enough to take the next step?

“You’re killing me,” I say, then shake my head. “Actually, scratch that, you’re giving me life again.” 

Her chest swells as she sucks in a breath and slowly lets it go. She cups my face and rubs her thumb across my cheek. Part of me wants to look away from her probing eyes, but I know with her I can show who I really am without judgment. 

Her gentle caress continues as her fingers lightly brush my lips, and I shiver. She moves to my eyebrows, tracing their shape before circling my face and coming back to my lips. 

“I could kiss you for hours.” She pecks my lips. “I want to do a lot more than kissing,” she confesses with another kiss. “But what I like most is talking to you, being in your presence.” I close my eyes to still my racing heart and feel her lips touch my forehead.

Hi bookies! I just got done with Just Another Book Signing this weekend and had a BLAST! Jill from Love Affair with Fiction and Yessi Smith put together a great event. It was so great meeting new people and hanging out with friends! Signings are always bittersweet because I love seeing my friends and meeting new ones, but it’s always sad to leave or see them leave in my case this weekend. I am, however, so grateful to have finally met so many people this weekend and for the opportunity to spend time with some of my favorite people. 

There are so many more people than pictured below that I am so happy to have met in person! I need better photographing skills. 😉

Mostly, this weekend served the purpose of getting an amazing group of people together. We had authors, bloggers, readers all in one hotel making so many memories. During a time where there is so much negativity out there, it’s great to praise the positive. I love this community and this weekend made me fall in love with it even more. I also wanted to keep everyone in Miami and make sure they stay here forever.

Excerpt

We all walk in the shadow of something. A shadow of expectancy, of pride, of ego, of memories. For some that shadow is the companion to the lonely. My shadow has been my company for so many years. It has pushed me to fight and win. It has talked me into doing things and talked me out of them. Tonight, my shadow dances along with me with the peaked interest of my visitors. One in particular. My shadow seeks his across the snow-covered street, but it’s nowhere to be found.

I have come to terms that Max and I are connected. I have come to accept he is bound to my life for now. What I have not come to realize is my need to see him. I search for him among the audience in awe of the window of pleasure and pain. I shut him out with the thick scarlet curtains that adorn my palace, but seek him in the darkness of the night. The moon traveling in search for the light of the sun to give it purpose.

For a long time I haven’t had a purpose besides survive in a world that I know how to control. I use what I have to move and seduce, destruct the power of some for a little while. Make them beg for something only I can give them. It may seem twisted to some, but it gives me a high to know I can control them. It pushes me forward knowing I have the upper hand. The other option is unacceptable.

Now, my mind is starting to rouse with new purpose. I’m familiar with the symptoms, but I can’t diagnose the disease. This purpose can give new meaning or destroy the little I have left. It could shatter that glass window, or keep me enclosed forever.

I shared this with my reader group this weekend. It’s the best way I can sum up this story: I’m sharing with you all a book about heart and soul. A story about growth and healing. I’m giving you a story about real life and the struggles that come tied to the ugliness life offers. It isn’t a happy story. It isn’t pretty and romantic. It’s hopeful. It’s honest, and it’s raw.

Writing for the soul

Writing has always been my therapy. Since a teenager, I found a way to release what I was experiencing in a healthy manner. My early writing was emotional and cold. Angry. It helped me reflect and grow. It helped me heal.

I’m getting ready to release a new book. It breaks my norm. It breaks the pattern I’ve used so far in my other books. It’s scary. It’s exciting. It’s so much more me than anything I’ve published. Have I mentioned that’s scary?

I sometimes get caught up in pleasing the people. Pleasing my audience. I write for me. I need to remember that. Now, that’s not to get confused with lack of gratitude or indifference towards my readers. I love you all (and I don’t use those words loosely). But what kind of writer would I be if I didn’t stay true to myself? If I didn’t give you, the reader, my very best. If I didn’t give you my truth. I would go against everything I stand for.

As I prepare to hit publish, I have doubted sharing this book. It’s easier to keep it to myself. Use it for my own healing and keep it in my own safe box. But then I think that maybe just one of you will read it and connect. Maybe it will help you or you’ll grasp the lesson. Maybe not, and that’s cool.

I’ve considered changing this story, but I wouldn’t stay true to myself. I promised myself I’d be unapologetically me, and publishing Red Lights, Black Hearts as it is is part of that plan.

I write for the love of evoking emotions. I write for you and for me. If I make it easy, there’s no challenge. I love challenges. I feed off of them. I ask that you go into this book with an open mind and heart. Savor the words and emotions. Allow them to seep into your soul and give Samantha a chance. More than anything, I hope you grow and shine like the moon.

Happy Summer!

I love summer break almost as much as I love Thanksgiving (pumpkin pie wins, though). I hope you are all enjoying some warmer weather. It is hot here in South Florida—perfect for beach days.

As many of you know, this summer I am also releasing my sixth book. (When did that happen?!) I still get giddy when I finish a new book. It really never gets old, and part of that is thanks to all of you lovely readers. I get to share my stories with all of you. Red Lights, Black Hearts is different than my other books. It’s honest and raw. I’ve mentioned that before. I hope it makes you reflect and look at situations differently like it did for me. Mostly, I hope you connect with Sam and her story. She is a character that grows so much from beginning to end.

Holiday Wishes and 2015 Reads

This year has been unforgettable in so many ways. I started the year publishing Restoring Us, and along followed three more books. It was a year where dreams became reality, and I was blessed to meet so many wonderful people along the way. I thank you all for your love and support; for your positive vibes and cheers along the way. It truly has been an honor connecting with you all and I hope to continue building friendships throughout 2016.

During this time of celebration, I want to wish you all a very happy holiday season. I hope you spend time with loved ones and reconnect with old friends. I also hope you get to curl up with a great book and enjoy some “you” time. I read some amazing novels this year. Here are a few recs for you to enjoy this holiday season:

  • Frenched by Melanie Harlow {And it’s FREE!} Really, I loved all the books in this series.
  •  Take Me Series by K.A. Linde: Grant McDermott. That’s all I need to say. Who doesn’t love a hot rockstar? K.A. Linde never disappoints and this series was no different. I binge read both books and to this day still think about them.
  • Bared to You by Sylvia Day: I know I’m late to this party, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready for the Gideon experience. I so was! Gideon quickly became one of my top book boyfriends. I cannot wait for the final book in this series. It may call for a reread.
  • Wanted by Kelly Elliott {Also FREE!} It’s no secret I have a weakness for cowboys. Kelly writes AMAZING cowboys. So much so, I think I have a chance of running into Gunner one day. And falling madly in love with each other. No? Don’t ruin my fantasy. This entire series was great actually. The points of view were really unique, and it was the first {and only} time I have read a series where they go interlocking plots. Really cool!
  • Thoughtful by SC Stephens: I can’t leave out my #1 book boyfriend. Kellan Kyle is perfect. Now add his POV, and my heart went out to him. I was excited to read this book, but even more to understand his side of the story.
